This Norman stone tower Keep was commissioned by Henry II in about 1168 and probably took
ten years to build at a cost of four thousand pounds.
It was the most elaborate and last keep of its type,
standing 95ft high and measuring 98ft x 96ft excluding the fore-building to the south.
