Dinas Bran

Clwyd - Wales

On the heights above Llangollen, Dinas Bran was once the home of Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor, the last Prince of Powys who died in 1199.

The ruined castle we see on the distance hill today, was probably

built by Gruffydd II ap Madoc son of Maelor c.1260.

For a time the castle stayed within the family until about 1276 when King Edward’s army invaded Wales.

The castle was set on fire and abandoned by the remaining family who fled.

Although the English took possession, it gradually passed out of importance and was abandoned again.
