Suffolk

Built by Richard fitzGilbert c.1090 as a motte and bailey castle.

By the 12th century the tower had been rebuilt as a polygonal stone Shell Keep.

In the 14th century it was the home of Elizabeth de Clare, one of the richest women in England.

By the late 15th century it was in ruinous state.
