Carisbrooke

Isle of Wight

William the Conqueror noted the site’s importance and gave Carisbrooke to his close friend and

adviser, William fitzOsbern who raised a motte and bailey castle c.1070.

By 1100 Richard de Redvers had become the new owner and it was probably under his direction that

the stone shell keep was built.

The family held this castle for the next two hundred years.

Most of the buildings that we see here today are attributed to this period.
