Carew

Dyfed - Wales

An Iron Age fort stood here before the Norman baron, Gerald fitzWalter took possession in 1105 and

built a motte and bailey castle.

Gerald’s descendants took the name of Carew and replaced the original structure by building

a fortified manor house in the 13th century.

By 1480 the Carew family had fallen on hard times and mortgaged the property which

fell into the hands of Rhys ap Thomas who built the gatehouse.
