Brougham

Cumbria

A Roman fort, Brocavum once stood here but during the reign of King Henry II it is thought Hugh dÁlbini replaced it with a stone keep.

By 1268 the property had passed to the Clifford family and it is during this period that the massive stone gatehouse and walling were probably built.
