William fitzOsbern probably built a motte and bailey castle here in the late 1060’s, which

has long since disappeared.

It is believed that Roger de Berkeley in 1117 replaced that early timbered fortress for a stone shell keep. Successive owners have added new buildings. There seems to be no Medieval construction information.
