Crowning a 500 ft sandstone escarpment, commanding the south eastern approach to the port of

Chester, stands the remains of Beeston Castle.

Begun in 1225 by Rannulf, Earl of Chester, a forceful man in 13th century power politics, the castle's importance was but short lived when the family line came to an end with the death of Rannulf in 1232 and his son John, Earl of Chester, in 1237, whereuponthe Earldom and its castles passed to the crown.
