Bamburgh

Northumberland

This fortress came into royal possession in 1095 when King William II (Rufus) took possession by force

from Robert de Mowbray.

The stone towered keep dates from around the 1170’s.

The 21st May 1368 King Edward III. appointed the military engineer / architect John Lewyn, to make repairs

to the castle and it seems likely he was responsible for further reparations during the summer of 1372.

After this date no drastic alterations appear to have been made before the end of the medieval period.
